If you have a severe toothache, a badly damaged tooth, or another type of dental emergency, you can’t afford to wait for treatment. Your best option is to schedule an emergency visit with your dentist right away so that they can help you take the first steps toward relief. To make sure that you’re ready for your visit, here’s an overview of what you can typically expect at an emergency dental appointment.
Emergency Examination
Sometimes, the true cause of your dental emergency and the full extent of the damage will not be completely obvious. As such, your dentist will begin your emergency appointment by performing a thorough examination of your mouth. This will normally involve taking an X-ray in order to identify any issues that may not be immediately obvious to the naked eye.
Your dentist will check for damaged teeth, signs of infection, and other worrisome symptoms. The more they know about your situation, the easier it will be for them to help you find the solution that your smile needs.
Relief From Immediate Pain
Many dental emergencies are accompanied by significant discomfort. During your emergency appointment, it’s important to let your dentist know about any pain that you’re experiencing so that they can take the necessary measures to relieve it. On top of that, they may recommend or prescribe certain medications to help you manage discomfort or swelling at home.
Determining Next Steps
After completing their initial examination, your dentist will be able to determine what steps need to be taken next to resolve your emergency situation. Sometimes it may be possible to perform specific treatments during the initial emergency appointment. For example, lost fillings can be replaced, and loose or knocked-out teeth can often be reattached.
In some cases, a follow-up visit may be required in order to fully treat the underlying problem. While you’re waiting for said visit, your dentist will give you tips for taking care of your mouth at home to prevent the situation from growing any worse. Remember, if there’s anything you don’t understand about your dentist’s recommendations, you’re always free to voice your questions and concerns.
When a dental emergency strikes, you can’t afford to hesitate. Pick up the phone immediately and give your dentist a call so that you can set up an emergency appointment; the sooner you do, the sooner you’ll be able to overcome your discomfort and enjoy a healthy smile again.
